Because of how busy I got over the past week, and how I got sick over the weekend, I totally forgot that two episodes of VisionQuest were released last week. But I’m catching up now!
At the end of the previous episode, Vision and Lisa are in a plane to Madripoor to save Tommy. Is everything going to work out for them? Let’s find out.
It’s not Madripoor we’re first shown at the start of this episode, but…somewhere in England, I guess? Jocasta is at Josephine Carrington’s grave, and Ultron has just found his way into her…CPU? I guess it’ll be easier to just call it her mind. And the two of them are flirting. You could also call it fighting, but we know this is how they flirt with each other.
We’re then shown Tommy, who is in Madripoor with Paladin. He’s been implanted with an explosive, which I think may not last long since I’m assuming the body’s white blood cells would attack it? I’ve learned all my medical knowledge from Cells At Work!
That little bit of banter between Tommy and Paladin that for sure is going to be where Tommy will get his code name? Hilarious and a reminder of how old I am. Elsewhere in Madripoo, Vision and Lisa are headed to the rendezvous point, with Lisa snatching money and accessories from people, while also trying to drive home to Vision that he has to be present in his son’s life, because Tommy is his son.
Paladin and Vision finally have their face-to-face, and Paladin thinks he has the upper hand because of the bomb he put in Tommy, but he didn’t account for the other AI residing in Vision. Then we get the twist that genuinely surprised me: Philomena Cunk isn’t human! She’s also AI! Edith shows her there more to her AI life than being cooped up in a server farm in Tajikistan, so that’s at least one weapon in the Paladin’s arsenal taken care of.
Back in Jocasta’s mind palace, she shares her story with Ultron — about how she used her own brain waves to complete the code for the first synthezoid J.I.M., introduced in episodes two and four. She also created nanos that run this code, and they’re with her dead body. That’s why she was at her grave. She’s looking at her ~children~.
In the outside world, Tommy finds out that this particular Vision was created to kill his mother, the Scarlet Witch, BUT Vision has mind games of his own to play. He’s found out the true identity of the Paladin, as well as his daughter, and he correctly points out that, as a quantum computer that can easily take over everyday technology, it would be so easy to kill his daughter and make it look like an accident.
That confrontation is cut short by a third party, who starts shooting at Vision and the Paladin. It’s Raza from the Ten Rings and the first Iron Man movie! Really drawing from the deeper part of the MCU! I’m guessing he’s the new bounty hunter assigned to acquire Vision? He’s got Vision and the Paladin cornered, but fortunately, Tommy has figured out that he does not have a bomb implanted in him, emboldening him to go back for Vision.
As for Vision, whoever the client was has finally spoken directly to him, bringing down Madripoor’s entire power grid to do so. He’s got to be pretty powerful! He’s promising to give him the ~heart~ he’s wanted, so of course we know that this is J.I.M., because they already said in a previous episode that he died from feeling too much.
So we get an action scene, and I have to admit that the whole drone-killing-the-men thing is a little spooky, considering that the internet was recently awash with footage of Russian soldiers unsuccessfully running away from Ukrainian drones. This make-believe world is getting a little too real, if you get my drift.
Meanwhile, Jocasta and Ultron are also making moves. Jocasta has one of the nanos she’s made with her, and she’s going to use it on someone from Vision’s group to control them, because that’s what she plans to do with the nanos that she’ll release — control humanity. BUT we find out that Friday has actually disguised herself within Jocasta’s mind palace, and she sends a message to Edith about what’s going to happen.
Unfortunately, Edith doesn’t warn them quickly enough, and Jocasta inserts that one nano into Lisa, who attacks Vision and is only stopped by Tommy by literally frying her brain. Inside Jocasta’s mind palace, Ultron and Jocasta kiss, and that has not got to be good for humanity.
