This month has just not been my month, okay? But I’m doing my best to catch up!
We were left with some pretty shocking information at the end of the previous episode: Asa’s already died once before. Is that a metaphorical death or an actual death? That’s something we’ll have to find out later on in the episode, because it opens with Yuru recalling the first time someone tried to kill him. Damn. His dad turns it into a teaching moment, which is fair, and tells him to not hesitate when it comes to people with the intent to kill. Again, damn. This is definitely not Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, where Ed and Al hesitate to kill.
Once Yuru returns to the village with his dad, the two of them hide the truth from the villagers, especially the grandma, who is really becoming more and more suspicious with each episode. It was after that attempted murder that Yuru and Asa’s parents fled the village, taking Asa with them and leaving Yuru behind.
After that trip down memory lane, we now hear the story of how Asa died because of a Higashi Village assassin. Her dying gave her the Break power, which she explains is the power of the Daemon that “lives on the boundary between the land of the dead and ours.” The visuals for this scene, by the way? Spectacular.
We also get to hear the whole prophecy regarding Yuru and Asa: “Male and female twins born in the eastern village before and after daybreak on a day when the day and night are equal lengths will travel to the shadow realm to command Daemons.” Pretty specific prophecy! Does this mean that Yuru needs to die as well so that he can use the Seal power?
The Daemon gives Asa two choices. She can either die or accept the Daemon and command the power of Break, which the Daemon says Asa can use to end wars all by herself. However, coming back with this power will mean that those who want to use her will start gathering around her. And I know this is a serious situation, but the first image that came to mind was that moment from UNHhhh. Which I just spent an hour looking for and can’t find. It’s the one where Trixie says “I don’t think you have that much money.” I have to physically force myself away from Google so I can stop searching this because I need to know now.
There is one thing that Asa also needs to know before making her decision, and that’s whether Yuru is still alive. The Daemon tells her that if Yuru did die, he won’t be here; he’ll be wherever the Daemon who has the Seal power is. Asa chooses to live, but in the process loses one of her eyes to the Break Daemon.
After those two stories, we finally get back to Dera, who we last saw in episode five. I still don’t know if he’s the one who sent the other guys who attacked the complex. Anyways, he’s the one knocking on the door now, and he says he’s picking up Yuru. Yuru wants to know the truth, so he asks if Dera can come into the complex to hear both sides of the story.
But it’s more than just Dera showing up now, as Asuma from episode five, head Kagemori Gonzou, and the new character Hikaru Kagemori also show up. In fact, Gonzou arrives with Dera, and Yuru can feel that both Jin and Gonzou want to kill Dera. Interesting ability. I wonder how that’s going to play out in further episodes? Dera confirms that the twins do need to die to acquire their powers, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll come back to life if they do die.
